Southwestern History Of The Cross

After the Spanish Conquistadores had defeated the Aztec empire in Mexico, explorers remained on the alert for other lands which might prove as wealthy as ones they had already conquered. It was this search for a “New” Mexico which ultimately led to expeditions which first brought the Spanish, and the Cross, to the Southwestern USA in the late 1530’s. The obsessive drive of these early explorers to find new riches and the mythical Seven Cities Of Gold was the catalyst that opened the area to colonization. In 1540 Coronado set out from Mexico to find these fabled cities and to convert the indigenous people to Christianity, thus the Cross was introduced to New Mexico as the most important spiritual symbol of the time. The cross continues to be treasured and sought after in all of its rustic beauty.
